Brittany Mahomes: From Soccer Player to Businesswoman
Brittany Lynne Mahomes (née Matthews) was born on August 31, 1995, in Whitehouse, Texas. That’s where her love of soccer began. What started as a dream of being an athlete in a small town has turned into a career that includes professional sports, fitness entrepreneurship, and owning sports teams. Today, she is proof of how powerful it is to change and stay true to your passions.
A Great College Career
Mahomes was named WHS Offensive MVP in high school and was an All-East Texas forward with 22 goals and five assists. But she didn’t start out wanting to play sports in college. Brittany didn’t think she would play college soccer after high school, but she ran into some of her old teammates at the University of Texas at Tyler, who told her to join their team.
Mahomes did well as a forward at UT Tyler. In 2016, her senior year, she became the first player in program history to score three hat-tricks in a season and a career. She ended the season with four hat-tricks. She set single-season program records with 40 points and 18 goals in her senior year of 2016. In 2023, Mahomes had the second-most points (78), goals (31), and shots on goal (111) of any player in Texas-Tyler history.
Playing soccer professionally in Iceland
After a successful college career, Mahomes went abroad to follow her dreams. She signed a contract to play professional soccer for UMF Afturelding/Fram in Iceland, which took her competitive spirit to the world stage. Even though she only lived abroad for a short time, Mahomes was able to win the championship trophy in Iceland during her one season. But she didn’t stay in Europe for long. Mahomes played one season for UMF, scoring two goals in five games. He was let go after the team moved up to the second division. She made a big change in her life when she decided to go back to the United States. She wanted to start a new business and have a family.
Making a fitness empire
Mahomes moved into the fitness business after he stopped playing professional soccer in 2017. She graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and became a certified personal trainer. In 2019, Brittany started an online training program to help people get healthier and feel better. She focused on making exercise and training plans for people at all levels of fitness. Through Brittany Lynne Fitness, she has helped many people live healthier lives and reach their fitness goals. Her commitment to health and fitness has made her a well-known figure in the health and fitness community, where she has a large social media following and is well-liked by people who care about their health.
A New Era for Women’s Soccer
Mahomes found a new way to help soccer after he stopped playing professionally. The National Women’s Soccer League gave an expansion team to a group of owners that included Mahomes on December 7, 2020. In October 2021, Mahomes said that the team would be called the Kansas City Current and that they would build a stadium for the team on the Berkley Riverfront Park in Kansas City, Missouri.
Brittany has always wanted to bring the NWSL back to Kansas City. She is a leader in the Kansas City community and a supporter of women in sports. Her competitive spirit and love of soccer give the club’s ownership group a new sense of purpose. The couple has been very important in promoting women’s soccer in Kansas City since her husband Patrick Mahomes joined the ownership group in 2023. In 2024, the Kansas City Current won the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. In 2022, they came in second in the NWSL Championship.
Life and the Future
Brittany married Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2022. Since then, the two have become one of the most famous power couples in professional sports. They have two kids together: Sterling Skye and Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III.
Brittany Mahomes is still able to be a businesswoman, a sports owner, and a mother at the same time. Her path from being a soccer player in a small town to becoming a successful sports entrepreneur shows that there are many ways to be successful. She has made a lasting impact on many parts of the sports world, whether through direct athletic competition, fitness coaching, or owning teams to help women’s sports grow. As the Kansas City Current builds its legacy in the NWSL, Brittany is still at the center of the movement to improve women’s soccer and give female athletes all over the country more chances to play.
