Anthony Elanga

Born in Football

Anthony David Junior Elanga was born on 27 April 2002 in the Hyllie district of Malmö, Sweden to a family where football was not just a passion – it was a way of life. His father, Joseph Elanga, was a professional footballer who played for Cameroon in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, and when Anthony was born, Joseph was playing for Malmö FF, the most storied club in Sweden. His mother, Daniella, also played women’s football in Sweden. Anthony grew up with two sisters Sandra and Chanelle and from the outset, was immersed in the sport, moulded by the skill, discipline and football intelligence of both parents.

That duality – Swedish born, Cameroonian by descent – would come to define both his national identity on the pitch and the colour of his character off it. He would go on to represent Sweden internationally, a choice that mirrored the country where he grew up and learned the game, and one he has embraced with pride.

The Swedish Origins and the Move to Manchester

Elanga’s footballing career became a serious matter when he joined the youth ranks of IF Elfsborg, a respected Swedish club, where he trained and developed from 2008 to 2013. He had a short spell at Malmö FF before his family felt it was important to make the move to England. His mother, by his own count, was the impetus for the move. Elanga has said his mum liked England and wanted a new life. “Moving was a huge thing. I learned English in Sweden, so it was not difficult to adapt the language.

Once settled in Manchester, and after a short spell with local club Hattersley FC, the young Elanga was spotted by scouts and signed for the Manchester United academy in 2014 at the age of just 12. He even changed schools to be nearer to United’s Carrington training ground – a sign of the seriousness with which he and his family took his development. From the start his electric pace and natural dribbling ability were a cut above his peers.

Graduating From the Old Trafford Ranks

Elanga’s development at Manchester United was rapid and impressive. He was given his debut for the under-18s at just 15 against Liverpool in April 2018. The forward was a model of consistency during his time in the academy, winning the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2020, one of the club’s highest accolades in youth football, after netting 10 times and setting up 10 goals in 18 appearances for the under-18s before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He made his first-team debut in a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa in the summer of 2020, before making his competitive debut starting on 11 May 2021 against Leicester City. And just days later, on May 23, 2021, he scored his first senior goal for the club in a Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, a landmark moment announcing his arrival. The teenage winger made an immediate impact in his first season and interim boss Ralf Rangnick was said to have identified him as a player the club could build around.

Champions League Glory and Struggles at Old Trafford

One of the highlights of Elanga’s Manchester United career so far was a memorable Champions League goal against Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 in the 2021-22 season – a goal that won him wide acclaim. His pace, energy and direct style of play saw him become a fan favourite and he went on to make 55 appearances for the senior side in all competitions.

However, his progress at Old Trafford was hampered following the arrival of manager Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2022. Under the Dutch coach, Elanga was increasingly on the periphery, making just five Premier League starts in his final season at the club. He chose to do something rather than be frustrated. “I just wanted to play,” he had said. I’m young, I don’t want to be on the bench all year. “When you’re young you want to play, you want to make mistakes, you want to take risks. That was a grown-up and decisive response from a guy who knew what he needed.

Nottingham Forest: a career revived

Nottingham Forest paid around £15m to bring Elanga to the City Ground in the summer of 2023 – and it would turn out to be one of the cleverest bits of transfer business of the season. Without such game time restrictions, Elanga thrived under manager Nuno Espírito Santo and quickly established himself as one of the most dangerous wide attackers in the Premier League.

He featured 36 times in the Premier League in his first season at Forest (2023-24), scoring five goals and making nine assists, and was a key player in their successful survival battle, finishing 17th and surviving on the final day. But it was during 2024–25 that Elanga made his real mark as a top-level talent. He made 38 Premier League appearances, netting six goals and contributing 11 assists – 17 direct goal involvements in a single campaign. The highlights included an incredible hat-trick of assists in a 7-0 rout of Brighton in February 2025 and a solo goal against Manchester United in April 2025, a win he said was very personal. “This one was kinda personal for me,” he said. “To prove that I am able to play at higher levels. Forest finished seventh that season and qualified for Europe for the first time in 30 years, with Elanga the heartbeat of that success.

The £55million switch to Newcastle United

His performances at Forest didn’t go unnoticed. Elanga became Newcastle’s marquee signing of the summer in July 2025, joining the club for a reported £55 million as the Magpies returned to Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League. It was a fee that spoke of the transformation he had undergone from a fringe player at Old Trafford to one of the most dynamic and productive wide forwards in England.

Elanga was clear about his eagerness when he signed: “I’m excited, I’m really happy but most importantly I’m ready. I’m ready to put on this black and white top to really fight for this team and give everything for the passionate fanbase that lives and breathes football.” Manager Eddie Howe was similarly effusive, describing him as “an exciting talent with attributes that make him a unique attacking threat”. Elanga made his club debut on 16 August 2025 against Aston Villa, wearing the number 20 shirt in a 0–0 draw.

St James’ Park Life

Elanga has had a season of adaptation and integration at Newcastle. The 23-year-old has featured in 32 Premier League games this season, mostly coming off the bench as he settles into a new system with world-class teammates such as fellow Swede Alexander Isak. He netted his first goal for the club in a League Cup semi-final tie at Manchester City in February 2026 and bagged a brace in a memorable Champions League clash with Barcelona in March. And Elanga has shown the quality that made him so coveted, and the resilience, despite the challenges of bedding into a new club competing on multiple fronts.

A weapon of speed and directness

Elanga is so dangerous and compelling not just because he is fast – although he is one of the fastest in the Premier League – but because of how intelligently he uses that speed. He plays in advanced areas but is also comfortable dropping deeper to receive the ball and turn defenders immediately, taking advantage of the space left behind. He is versatile enough to play on either flank or through the centre as a second striker, a tactical flexibility managers have found increasingly valuable.

Elanga has modelled his game on Thierry Henry, the Arsenal and France legend – an idol whose combination of explosive pace, technical skill and composure in front of goal provides the template Elanga is looking to follow. His left foot is weaker than his right but is improving and his willingness to take on defenders one on one adds a direct and unpredictable quality that defenses have a hard time planning for.

Sweden & the Global Stage

Elanga has become a more and more important player for Sweden at international level. He made his senior debut in March 2022 and earned more than 20 caps for his country, scoring crucial goals. His ability to stretch defences and create space has made him a key part of the Swedish attacking set up. His great club season in 2024-25 earned him a place on Sweden’s 2026 FIFA World Cup roster—one of soccer’s biggest stages—and it’s a testament to how far he’s come in such a short time.

A rooted, multi-lingual character

Away from the pitch Elanga is a down-to-earth and personable character. He is fluent in English, French and Swedish, a testament to his multicultural upbringing, and the adaptability that has served him so well in life. He has been effusive in his praise of the role his family has played in keeping him grounded during difficult periods, especially the last difficult year at Manchester United when opportunities to play first-team football were few and far between.

He proudly wears his Cameroonian heritage along with his Swedish identity, representing a modern generation of footballers who move across borders and cultures, bringing something richer and more nuanced to the sport as a result.

The Modern Footballer’s Journey

Anthony Elanga’s story is a tale of patience, belief and the courage to leave comfort behind in search of opportunity. From the streets of Malmö to the youth pitches of Manchester, from the shadows of Old Trafford to the spotlight of Nottingham and now the grandeur of St James’ Park, his journey has been marked by a determination to prove himself at every turn.

At just 24 years of age he is very much at the start of what will be a long and distinguished career. With Champions League experience, a World Cup looming, and the best years of his footballing life ahead of him, Anthony Elanga is not just a player to watch – he is a player who will define the Premier League for years to come.
