Diogo Costa is considered one of the best goalkeepers among the young generation. He’s a Portugese football player. The goalkeeper of Swiss origin was born on 19 September 1999 in Rothrist Switzerland to Portuguese parents. The Portuguese family moved to Portugal when he was seven years old. The left-footed and right-sided shooter-stopper is 1.88m tall, being the captain of Primeira Liga club FC Porto and first-choice goalkeeper of the Portugal national team.
Inspired by Vtor Baa, a former FC Porto player, goalkeeping became Costa’s passion. His footballing journey began in a local academy before he moved to Benfica’s feeder club Pvoa de Lanhoso, where his friendship with vitinha was born from playing and training. He entered the well-known academy of FC Porto in 2011. The young goalkeeper’s career took off as he triumphed in the UEFA Youth League, a success in which he took an instrumental role in 2019, and also won several Portuguese youth league titles on the way. He played for the Portugal national team as well, contributing his effort to Portugal’s victory in the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, and also being part of the under-19 team that claimed the same trophy in 2018.
In 2019, he was brought on to the Porto senior team. He was a quick impact player and earned recognition in his first senior season, when he claimed both the league and cup titles (Primeira Liga – Taa de Portugal). At the age of 22, by 2021, he was playing and the captain in the position of the goalkeeper. Besides being a champion player, he has been successful in securing another domestic double and has won four Primeira Liga titles, nine Taas de Portugal, and one Taa da Liga since then. During the 2025, 26 season, having retired Pepe as his replacement, he helped Porto to become the champion of the league and also won records for 21 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga and 27 clean sheets in all competitions. And, he has several times in his career been recognized as the Primeira Liga Goalkeeper of the Year.
Estimates from mid-2025 suggest that Diogo Costa’s net worth may be in the vicinity of 35-40 million (around $38-43 million USD), combining his club earnings, endorsements, and his income from top Portugal football talent days during his career so far.
Most of his wages come from his FC Porto deal running until June 2030. During 2025-26 season, he will get about 4.81m gross per year (92,500 per week) which will top his fellow players in the club salary list. In late 2025 when his contract was extended, net wages from that were reckoned to be about a 2.5 million yearly. With professional career development, from junior reserve team he has had quite a leap in those figures.
Costa was handed his Portugal debut in 2021, and quickly relegated veteran Rui Patrcio to second-choice behind him for the national side, and since then the Portugal No.1 has represented them at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup. During Euro 2024 Costa managed to keep out all three Slovenia penalties in a round-of-16 tie to earn a shoot-out victory for his country, and he also won the UEFA Nations League in 2025 with Portugal, and has approximately 48 senior caps to his name as of mid-2026.
Diogo Costa combines modern goalkeeping qualities with old school shot-stopping. Known for his imposing presence, reflexes, distribution and penalty-saving skills. Porto’s captain and a lynchpin of the Portuguese national side, he keeps setting standards and inspiring the next generation of keepers. From Swiss-born youth prospect to one of Europe’s most dependable guardians, he’s come a long way, defined by dedication and consistent excellence.
