When he was 27 years old in 1983, Dilip Shanghvi started a company called Sun Pharmaceutical Industries with a very small loan of Rs 10,000 given by his father. This modest venture was based in Vapi Gujarat with a few people and focused on psychiatric medications – a narrow area that hadn’t received much attention before. Shanghvi first launched a small product line, then gradually added more to the range, set up research and development facilities, and ultimately took the company public in 1994.
The major growth of Sun Pharma, under Dilip Shanghvi’s leadership, happened mostly by way of steady internal growth combined with a well-picked set of acquisitions. Some important turning points were buying Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, an American pharmaceutical company, Taro Pharmaceuticals Industries in Israel, and a much bigger acquisition being the Ranbaxy Laboratories deal, which was his biggest and a landmark of 2014-15. For Sun Pharma, this deal meant becoming the number one pharmaceutical company in India, and getting on the global scene among specialty generic top manufacturers, with more than 100 countries as their business partners.
In addition, Shanghvi steered the company to focus on the production of higher margin specialties and novel products, in fact, with their traditional generic lines, they continued producing generics at lower margins. As years passed Sun Pharmaceutical developed a strong presence around the world, mainly in the United States and other major markets alongside its continued dominance in India. Presently it has many manufacturing sites around the globe and still continues to fund R & D efforts, mainly concentrating on complex generics and specialties.
In 2016, the work of Shanghvi was commemorated through the Padma Shri award, which is a very highly regarded Indian civilian honorary award. In addition, Shanghvi has been the recipient for the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’-type awards from many organizations like Ernst & Young, Forbes, and The Economic Times. For a number of years, Shanghvi has taken up roles in different fields of advisory and leadership, like that of former president of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance and the director of the Reserve Bank of India’s central board.
A year after the end of Shanghvi’s ten-year reign as Managing Director in 2025, on the new year’s eve day of 2025, the company executive and long-term employee, Kirti Ganorkar, will be the one handling that position. The Executive Chairman post of Shanghvi will remain unchanged for 2025-26, after undergoing the company’s regular succession plan. The main thing in the future plan by Shanghvi is Yet to concentrate on the specialty part as the core of the company and But to be the person who has the final say in the company’s strategic plan for a very distant future. His son Aalok has recently come on to the board full time as a director and is now the Chief Operating Officer. Also, daughter of Dilip Shanghvi, Vidhi works on consumer healthcare and related areas through her role as a director.
Shanghvi prefers to stay away from the glare of media and lets facts speak for his work. Many consider him a self-made business leader having transformed a small-scale pharmaceutical business into one of India’s biggest pharmaceutical corporations and thereby creating one of the most significant pharmaceutical ventures. As per Forbes, Shanghvi is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals and has repeatedly made the list of India’s wealthiest. Most of it, he has made from his shares in Sun Pharma. Interestingly, even though the company he started is a multibillion-dollar outfit worldwide, he is still very reserved and has always preferred a strategy that prioritizes steady, cumulative progress and growth over any flashy short-term gains.
