THE CALCULATOR AND THE CROSS: WHY JESUS DOESN’T DO MATH

By Roberto Rafo

A few days ago, I was sitting with a young man whose heart was completely broken. He was weeping so hard I thought his ribs would crack. He was trapped in a bitter, grueling war with a heavy, habitual addiction. For two days, he fought like a lion. On the third day, the exhaustion caught up to him, his willpower collapsed, and he fell hard into the mud.

When he woke up the next morning, he looked at his calendar and started doing math. He told me, “Roberto, I am back at zero. My three-day streak is gone. I have ruined everything. God must be completely disgusted with me. If the world ends today, I am going to the bottom of the pit.” Then he said something that cut me to the quick: “But even if I am sent to the bottom of hell, I will spend eternity praising Him from the mud, because I still love Him.”

When I heard those words, I wanted to shake him by the shoulders and give him a big, booming laugh! I told him, “My dear friend, a soul that praises God from the bottom of the pit cannot go to hell! It is a theological impossibility! The devil would run away from you in absolute terror because he cannot stand the sound of praise!”

But his agony revealed a massive, tragic disease that is infecting millions of people in our modern world: we are trying to measure the infinite, burning love of God using a pocket calculator.

We live in a world of strict transactions. If you go to work, you get paid. If you break the law, you get a ticket. If you fail your exam, you get an ‘F’. We are so trained by the corporate algorithms of this life that we look in the mirror, see our own sins and weaknesses, and think God runs His Kingdom like a strict bank manager waiting to foreclose on our souls the second our accounts run low.

We think God is keeping a giant scoreboard in heaven. Two points for a prayer, minus ten points for a bad thought, zero momentum because you slipped up this morning.

Let me tell you a secret that I myself, a sinner, learned: Jesus doesn’t do math. He threw His calculator away two thousand years ago when He climbed up the rocky hill of Calvary!

If God used our mathematics, the world would have ended a long time ago. Think about a toddler who is learning to take his very first steps. The little boy stands up, takes three beautiful, brave steps toward his father, loses his balance, and tumbles hard onto the floor, bruising his knee. What does the father do? Does he stand over the weeping child with a clipboard, shake his head, and say, “Well, that’s a failure. You broke your streak. You are back at zero. Start over from the beginning”?

Of course not! The father runs to the child, picks him up in his arms, kisses his tears away, and says, “Try again, my precious little one. Daddy is right here.”

If an earthly father has that much tenderness for a clumsy child, how much more does the Almighty God have for you? Your day five failure is not a total loss; it is simply the morning the Heavenly Father picks you up, washes the dirt off your knees, and whispers, “Take another step.”

The devil is an expert accountant, you see. He doesn’t just tempt you to fall; that is only his opening move. His real masterpiece happens after you slip up. He settles over your room like heavy black smoke and whispers: “Look at you. You promised God you would be strong, and you failed again before breakfast. You are a hypocrite. You are dirty. Don’t you dare go to church, and don’t you dare pray. You have to clean yourself up before you can look at a crucifix.”

That is a lie straight from the pit of hell! Jesus did not come to earth to call the perfect; He came to hunt for the broken! A hospital is not a museum for healthy people; it is a clean, frantic space where the sick come to be healed. The Church is a field hospital for wounded souls, and the Confessional is the operating table where the Divine Physician stitches up our wounds with the thread of absolute mercy.

I remember once seeing a mother and her young daughter begging for help outside a grocery store. My immediate instinct was to go inside and buy them some hot food. But by the time I walked back out into the parking lot, they had vanished into thin air. The food went cold, and from a human perspective, it looked like a total waste of money and time.

But do you know what Heaven saw? Heaven didn’t care that the bag ended up empty or the food went cold. Heaven logged the transaction the exact microsecond the heart chose to love! God doesn’t judge the success of our lives by our earthly efficiency; He judges it by the raw, hidden movement of our love.

If you are reading this today, and your soul is bleeding from a hidden wound—if you are trapped in an addiction you hate, if you are carrying a shame so heavy you can’t lift your eyes to the sky, or if you think you have wandered too far down the dark road to ever come back—look at the Cross.

Look at those arms stretched wide out on the wood. Jesus didn’t stretch His arms out like that just to show you how much He was suffering; He stretched them out to show you that there is no boundary to His embrace! No matter how deep into the mud you have fallen, His arms are long enough to reach down, grab you by the coat sleeve, and pull you back into the light.

Stop counting your failures. Stop doing the devil’s arithmetic. The only currency that matters in this life is the Precious Blood that poured out of the Heart of Christ, and that treasury can never run dry. Turn off your calculators, drop to your knees, and let the unshakeable, infinite peace of God tell you who you truly are: you are not your mistakes; you are a child bought at a tremendous price.

Pray, hope, and don’t worry! Worrying is completely useless. God is merciful, He knows the tangled wires in your brain, and He is waiting right now to forgive you. Step out of the dark, walk into the nearest church, drop your heavy bags at the altar, and let Him love you. The war is already won.
