Yemi Alade’s family was very diverse when she was born in Nigeria. Her father, James Alade, is from Ondo State and was a police commissioner. Her mother, Helen Uzoma, is from Abia State, so she grew up with a proud Yoruba–Igbo background. Yemi was the fifth of seven children and grew up with a strong sense of duality, taking in the rhythms, customs, and languages of both her Igbo and Yoruba roots. She says this duality is an important part of her art.

She went to St. Saviour British Primary School and then moved to Victory Grammar School in Lagos to finish her secondary education. Yemi Alade went to the University of Lagos to study geography after that. She had also been interested in music since she was a child. Her love of music really took off in the halls of the University of Lagos, and her school became the starting point for a career that would take her around the world.

Career

Yemi Alade started her professional music career in 2005 when she joined the girl group Noty Spices at the age of 16. She didn’t start her solo career until 2009, when she won the Peak Talent Show. This win changed the course of her musical career and made her famous.

Yemi Alade is very private about her personal life, even though she is very well-known in public. Yemi Alade is not married as of 2025, and she has not publicly named her boyfriend. Even though people have been talking about her personal life, she has kept it to herself.

She has said that she is annoyed that people are asking about her sex life instead of her music. She said, “If I were a man, they’d ask about my music, not who I’m sleeping with.” It’s exhausting.
