Early Life & Education

Marta Olehivna Kostyuk spent her childhood in a family of athletes in Kyiv. Her mother, Talina Beiko (also spelled Talyna Beyko), was a professional tennis player who reached a career-high WTA ranking of No. 391, won ITF titles and played for Ukraine in the Fed Cup. Her father, Oleh Kostyuk, was the technical director of the Antey Cup junior tournament. She has two sisters, Mariya, who played college tennis in the U.S., and Zoryana, and cousins in football and gymnastics.

Kostyuk took up tennis at age five at the Antey Tennis Club in Kyiv, where she was initially taken to spend more time with her busy mother-coach. She was coached early on by her uncle, Taras Beiko, who played for the USSR and Ukraine. She has spoken of the family’s deep ties to the sport and to Ukrainian identity, including a speech she gave at 13 years old in the Ukrainian Parliament, calling for improved conditions for youth sports.
