Early life and education

Cori Dionne Gauff was barely school age when she picked up a tennis racket and told her parents she wanted to be the best player in the world. Her parents, Corey Gauff and Candi Odom Gauff, were both standout athletes in college—her father played basketball at Georgia State University, and her mother had a full athletic scholarship to Florida State University, where she competed in hurdles and heptathlon.

She started playing tennis when she was six years old. Her family moved to Delray Beach when she was seven years old so she could have better training facilities. She trained at 10 years old in France with Patrick Mouratoglou, who has long been the coach of tennis star Serena Williams. She told Sports Illustrated Kids she got the nickname “Coco” because it was confusing in her family for her to share the same name as her dad. Her aunt came up with the name “Coco,” after her dad’s childhood nickname, “Co.”

Careers

Coco Gauff’s rise in the tennis world has been nothing short of meteoric, from dancing in the stands of the U.S. Open at the age of eight, to lifting the trophy in Arthur Ashe Stadium eleven years later.

She was awarded a wildcard entry to Wimbledon in 2019 and shot to fame when she famously beat Venus Williams – one of her childhood idols – in the first round. In the same year, at the tender age of 15 years and 214 days, she captured the Linz Open, becoming the youngest player to win a Tour-level title since Vaidisova in 2004.

She beat Aryna Sabalenka in three sets at the 2023 US Open to become the first American teenager to win that title since Serena Williams in 1999. She wrapped up 2024 as the WTA Finals singles champion, the youngest WTA Finals Champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004 and the first American to win the title since Serena Williams in 2014.

Then in 2025, she defeated Sabalenka in a tense final to win the French Open — becoming the first American woman to win Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015. Off the tennis court, she launched her own management company, Coco Gauff Enterprises, in 2024 with the support of William Morris Endeavor (WME), describing it as a platform to create an impact in “business, philanthropy and beyond.”

Personal Life

Gauff is a proud Christian and frequently talks about her faith in post-match speeches. After winning the Cincinnati Open in 2023 she said: “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ… I don’t pray for results, I just ask I get the strength to give it my all.”

Her two younger brothers are Codey, four years her junior, and Cameron, nine years her junior. She loves hanging out with her brothers and family, watching superhero movies and making TikTok videos. Her favorite city is Paris due to the history, food and architecture. Her favorite celebrity is Beyoncé. She has also spoken about coping with stress and emotional issues in 2020, saying she had felt the mental weight of huge expectations.
