Home Careers and rise

Stokes joined the Durham academy and made his professional debut in 2009. He made an immediate impact, dismissing experienced batsman Mark Ramprakash with his third ball in senior cricket. He made his first-class debut in 2010 and scored a hundred for England Under-19s against India in 2010 World Cup.

He was a key player for Durham, helping them to the County Championship title in 2013 and doing well in limited overs cricket. Stokes has also played in a number of T20 leagues around the world, including spells with Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. His powerful batting and all-round skills saw him earn lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) contracts.

International Debut and Early Challenges

Stokes made his England debut in ODIs and T20Is in 2011. His Test debut was in the Ashes series in Australia in 2013 where he performed creditably in a heavy defeat. He had discipline problems early in his career and was even sent home from a tour for breaking team rules.

There was a low point in 2017 when he was involved in an affray outside a Bristol nightclub (the charge was later dropped) and was suspended and lost the vice-captaincy. He was fined by the ECB for bringing the game into disrepute but came back stronger.

Peak Achievements & Heroics (2019 & Beyond)

Stokes made his breakthrough in 2019. He was instrumental in England winning the Cricket World Cup for the first time on home soil, scoring an unbeaten 84 in the final and starring in the Super Over to win Player of the Match. Weeks later, he scored an unbeaten 135 at Headingley in the Ashes to help England win by one wicket in one of the greatest chases in cricket.

He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, ICC Cricketer of the Year and an OBE. He was a member of the England team that won the T20 World Cup in 2022. As a batsman he holds records including the highest Test score by an England player batting at No 6 (258) and numerous six-hitting records.

Captaincy and the Age of Bazball

Stokes was named as England’s Test skipper in April 2022, replacing Joe Root. He, with coach Brendon McCullum, led a fearless, aggressive style of play they called “Bazball” that emphasized attacking batting and high run rates. It brought a number of series wins and changed England’s Test fortunes, but it also provoked debate. He captained until his retirement, one of England’s most successful captains by win percentage.

Personal Life

Stokes married Clare Ratcliffe in 2017 and they have two children. He has been open about mental health struggles and the toll of the game. He is controversially seen as a talismanic figure and leader.

Legacy and Retirement

Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2026, following a decorated career of more than 15 years. He played 122 Tests, aggregating more than 7,000 runs and taking more than 250 wickets and contributed substantially in limited-overs cricket. Stokes is known for his ability to perform under pressure, explosive batting and leadership and is considered one of England’s greatest all-rounders and a game-changing figure for the team.
