The Honor MagicBook X16 Pro 2024 appears to be one of the more attractive budget-to-mid range laptops available and is squarely targeted at students, office workers and everyday home users. It has its trade-offs, but reviewers have praised it for a good price, comfortable keyboard, beautiful design and nice display. It’s a machine that gets a lot of things right at a competitive price point, and for many users, that formula will be more than sufficient.
Build Quality & Design
The MagicBook X16 Pro follows a simple and rational design concept. Every detail is polished meticulously with exquisite screw arrangement and fine frosting process, showing a smooth unibody design with flexible hinge. It comes in one color – Space Gray – and weighs a feather-light 1.75kg with a slim 17.9mm profile. The bright silver finish makes the laptop look productive and it’s stately and blending at the same time. It may not be the most daring design in the category, but it is clean, professional and well built for the price.
Display
The 16-inch FHD IPS Anti-Glare display features 4.5mm ultra-slim bezels for an immersive visual experience. One of the best features of the laptop is the large 16:10 aspect ratio, more screen real estate and a more comfortable user experience. The 60Hz refresh rate and 300 nits peak brightness means it is best suited for indoor general computing. It has an E-book mode for reading and TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light and Flicker Free certifications making it perfect for long hours of use. That said, the screen only covers 45% NTSC so it’s not great for color-accurate work like photo or video editing.
Performance
The MagicBook X16 Pro 2024 is equipped with the 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13420H processor, 8GB of LPDDR4x dual-channel RAM, and 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, making it more efficient and ensuring smooth multitasking. The processor defaults to a 35W setting for most tasks, but you can press Function and P together to enable High Performance mode, which increases the wattage to 40W — but only when the laptop is plugged in. In real world use the performance delivers a decent amount of power for everyday tasks, which borders on enough for more intense applications such as editing RAW images in Photoshop. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics, however, are going to hold back users who need serious graphical horsepower — gaming beyond casual or retro titles isn’t a realistic proposition here.
Biometrics, Trackpad and Keyboard
The full-size backlit keyboard features a dedicated numeric keypad and 1.5mm key travel for comfortable extended typing sessions. The keyboard is lauded for its comfort, a key selling point for productivity-minded users. Security is handled by a 2-in-1 fingerprint scanner built straight into the power button, so users can unlock the laptop in seconds.
Battery Life & Charging
The 60Wh battery lasts up to 11.5 hours on a single full charge. The 65W Type-C fast charger weighs only 200g and can charge the device to 45% in 30 minutes. It also supports charging multiple devices. This is a relatively lightweight and compact charger so a field top-up is a realistic prospect. Battery life will vary depending on workload but for office and light productivity use most users should get through a working day comfortably.
Software & Thermal Management
Honor’s thermal management is exemplary, with dual heat pipes and ultra-thin 0.2mm blades, the temperatures remain comfortable even on the lap. On the software side, Honor’s PC Manager is similar to Huawei’s alternative, with a remarkably light bloatware load and a neatly organized app that provides access to important settings, firmware updates and warranty info — leaving the laptop clean for users to add their own software.
Connectivity & Ecosystem Features
WiFi 6 is on board, promising speeds of up to 9.6Gbps in theory, and it also has Bluetooth 5.1. On the ecosystem side, Honor has cross-device features that let users control multiple devices using the laptop’s keyboard and mouse, drag-and-drop files between devices, and even take and make phone calls right on the laptop. These features are of real value to users already in the Honor or Huawei ecosystem.
Speakers
The stereo speaker setup is basic in terms of sound quality, but fine for casual listening, but there is some distortion at higher volumes, particularly in the bass – which is unsurprising on a laptop at this price point. For more serious media consumption, headphones or external speakers are recommended.
Decision
The Honor MagicBook X16 Pro 2024 is a good all-rounder budget laptop that punches above its weight in some areas. Its clean design, comfortable keyboard, solid battery life, fast charging and large eye-comfortable display make it a genuinely attractive package for students and everyday office users. The segment is expected to have limitations, including an integrated GPU, limited screen color coverage and soldered RAM, so buyers should choose their configuration wisely. The Honor MagicBook X16 Pro 2024 is a good choice if you want a budget laptop for everyday computing, thanks to its large display, full-sized keyboard and sturdy build. It’s pretty hard to argue with what you get for the price.
