Greg Brockman

Gregory Brockman’s origins dates back to November 29 1987, and was born in the small town of Thompson in North Dakota. The town’s population is a mere 1,100. And it is to be found in the furthest away part of North Dakota, and not only in ND, in America probably, not so. It is so country-like that there are very little things you can find there. Ron Brockman and Ellen Feldman, who were both doctors, decided to have four children, with Greg being the third one.

They resided on a hobby farm where they had horses, guinea hens geese a cow and a pig, and were several miles away from their nearest friends. Loneliness led to the development of an inner strength and independence and a deep love for maths, science and problem-solving. At that time, no one could have guessed that the rate farm boy would one day co-found OpenAI, lead the creation of such a groundbreaking technology as ChatGPT and become a billionaire, with a net worth estimated at nearly $30 billion.

Brockman displayed his talent from his very young age. Being an excellent student in math, chemistry and computer science at Red River High School in Grand Forks, he had already done the most advanced courses by his sophomore year, going to the University of North Dakota for classes through dual enrollment. He finished school in 2007 and started a career that mixes brainpower with courageous risks. Besides completing high school he spent a year off to deepen his knowledge of programming, influenced by reflections of Alan Turing on machines that could ‘understand’ things their creators didn’t.”

He entered Harvard University in 2008, where he began studying mathematics. After one year Brockman moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for electrical engineering and computer science. In his trademark independent spirit, he dropped out in 2010 without finishing his degree at either of the institutions. This wasn’t a decision born out of failure but out of opportunity; he joined a tiny startup called /dev/payments, soon to be renamed Stripe, as its fourth employee.

Brockman’s impact on Stripe was immediate and profound. He was the first engineer, and helped to build the foundation for the infrastructure of online payments, growing the company from a handful of people to over 250 during his tenure. In 2013, he was promoted to Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and led engineering through explosive growth. Stripe’s success at demystifying web commerce justified Brockman’s belief in building massive scale systems that directly impact people’s lives. His hands-on coding style and ability to solve complex technical challenges earned him a reputation as a “10x engineer,” someone who is exponentially more productive than the average.

But Brockman had bigger ambitions than fintech. In 2015 he left Stripe to co-found OpenAI with Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever and others including Elon Musk. The organization started small, operating out of Brockman’s living room, with a bold mission: to make sure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits everyone in humanity. Brockman was CTO, then President, and had a significant role in defining both technical direction and organizational culture.

In the early days of OpenAI, they did ambitious research. Brockman worked on projects including the Gym toolkit for reinforcement learning and OpenAI Five, which played Dota 2 at a top level. He advocated for AI development to be overseen and safe at scale. Under his technical leadership OpenAI transitioned from a pure non-profit to a hybrid structure, allowing for the massive compute investments needed for breakthroughs. Major milestones include the launch of Codex, DALL-E and the GPT series. The 2022 launch of ChatGPT rocketed Brockman and his team at Open AI to global stardom and the spotlight on AI’s potential to democratize knowledge and creativity.

Brockman’s work ethic is legend. He typically logs 60 to 100 hours a week, coding about 80 percent of the time. He is still a builder at heart, and as President he leads the Scaling organization, which builds out the infrastructure for increasingly capable models. His blog is testament to his drive to learn . Years at OpenAI , and he broke through mental blocks to become a machine learning practitioner . He shows that any dedicated programmer can learn a domain they are unfamiliar with .

Success has brought enormous profits. Brockman’s stake in the company has been valued at nearly $30 billion, putting him among the world’s richest people. He is not interested in fame, only in the effect of his work. In 2019, he married Anna Brockman in a ceremony held at the company’s offices, officiated by Ilya Sutskever. The couple has a passion for technology and philanthropy.

Brockman’s journey is a master class in success that is defined by relentless curiosity, willingness to take calculated risks (like dropping out of elite universities) and focus on mission-driven work. From rural isolation to Silicon Valley influence, he used early math and programming interests to build systems that reshape economies and societies. His shift from the rapid commercialization of Stripe to OpenAI’s long-term safety focus shows adaptability and vision.

He has been tested by challenges. His 2023 stand with Altman in the board drama at Open AI underlined his loyalty and leadership in a challenging situation. He’s been involved in discussions around AI regulation, safety and open sourcing, pushing for responsible development.

Today Brockman’s still shaping the field as OpenAI explores an IPO and pushes toward AGI. His story is an inspiration to aspiring engineers: start with the fundamentals, embrace the discomfort of learning, and build for the benefit of humanity. In interviews, he stresses that the future of AI needs scalable systems and ethical oversight — values he has promoted since the beginning of OpenAI.

Greg Brockman’s success is not just about technical genius or timing, it’s about execution, humility and a genuine desire to solve meaningful problems. His journey from North Dakota farms to the cutting edge of AI shows that amazing things can come out of ordinary places with a relentless drive to build the future. With AI’s rise, Brockman’s legacy as a co-creator and steward lives on, empowering millions and protecting humanity’s interests.
