Mozilla Firefox 144 came out on October 14, 2025. It has a lot of new features and improvements, many of which were requested by the community for a long time. This update’s main goal is to improve organization, privacy, and user control. This is done by making profile management easier to use and improving tab grouping. Along with these changes that affect users, there are also important updates to security and web platform support for developers.
Better management of profiles and tabs
The new Profile Management feature is one of the most important new features. It is being rolled out to all users over time. This feature lets people create separate profiles for their online lives, like work, school, or personal browsing, that are easy to switch between. You can change the name, avatar, and color theme of each profile. Most importantly, each profile keeps its own bookmarks, tabs, and browsing history separate, which greatly improves privacy and focus.
There are also a few important changes to tab management that the community asked for. Now, when users drag a tab into a collapsed tab group, the group doesn’t automatically expand. This keeps the interface clean and organized. Also, if you have a collapsed tab group and are using a tab in it, that tab will now stay visible, so it won’t disappear into the collapsed group. This makes it easier for people who rely on the tab grouping feature to get their work done.
Improvements to security and usability
Firefox 144 also makes a big improvement to security by making the encryption for passwords stored on your computer stronger. The Firefox Password Manager now uses a newer AES-256-CBC encryption scheme to protect saved logins. This replaces the older 3DES-CBC scheme. Passwords that were synced through Firefox Sync were already protected by a strong end-to-end encryption scheme. This change makes the security of login data stored on your computer even better.
A small but useful change to the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature makes it easier to use when watching media. Now, users can close a PiP window without stopping the video by holding down the Shift key and clicking the close button or by using the Shift + Esc keyboard shortcut. The video will keep playing in its original tab, which will make it easier to control media playback. Also, if Google is set as your default search engine, a new “Search Image with Google Lens” option will show up in the right-click menu. This makes it easier to search for images.
Support for developers and web platforms
There are a lot of new APIs and standards that developers can use. Mozilla Firefox 144 now supports the View Transitions API Level 1, which makes it easy to make animated transitions between different website views. This makes Single-Page Applications (SPAs) better. The Element.moveBefore API is also supported, which makes it easier to work with the Document Object Model (DOM). The PerformanceEventTiming.interactionId support is another improvement to the platform. This helps with calculating the Interaction to Next Paint (INP) metric, which is a key measure of responsiveness. The lock() and unlock() methods for the ScreenOrientation interface are also available on Windows tablets and Android devices.
